Obituary
Anna C. Behrends

Anna C. Casper, the daughter of Gerhard (George) and Gretje (Grace) Holz Casper, was born April 6, 1922, on her family’s farm near Johnson, Nebraska. She was the youngest of six children.

While she was growing up Anna became the highest scoring student for her county and was humbled by that accomplishment. She had an intense love of the outdoors and spent many hours helping with chores and learning agricultural skills from her father.

She met her future husband, Ivan Behrends a short while before he was drafted into the military for WW II and spent many sleepless nights concerned about his welfare while he traveled to England, was part of the D Day invasion, and spent another year throughout France and Germany involved in many military actions.

Anna was thankfully relieved when he returned home in the fall of 1945 and they were married February 7, 1946 at St. John’s Stone Church near Auburn, Nebraska.

She was immensely proud of Ivan and had a quiet reserved admiration for his courage and participation in WWII. They rented a farm south of Auburn for the next several years before purchasing one adjacent to the farm where she had grown up.

There they raised their three children, Larry, Connie and Arlan. Anna’s skill’s helped greatly toward the success of the family and farm. She was always up before dawn preserving and canning produce, gardening, baking, and filling the freezer with produce along with their farm raised beef. As an accomplished pattern maker she tailored and sewed the family’s clothing. Anna was also known for her beautiful quilting skills at home and in the community.

She enjoyed entertaining friends with a game of cards or a Saturday night dance out. She and Ivan lived there together until he passed away at the age of 92 in the fall of 2009. Shortly thereafter Anna moved to an apartment in Tecumseh, Nebraska, eventually moving into an area nursing home in 2012. There she resided until May 17, 2016 when she entered a local hospital and was shortly thereafter transferred to Bryan Memorial East hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska. There she passed away quietly on June 6, 2016.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan, an infant child, her parents, George and Grace Casper, her brothers, John and Bruno, her sisters, Nora Dirks, Lena Behrends and Tena Holthus.

She is survived by her three children, Larry Behrends and his wife Vicki, Connie Behrends and Arlan Behrends, two grandchildren, Travis Behrends along with his wife Rachel and their children, Ginger, Jonas and Clover and Bryan Behrends along with his wife Emily, and four step grandchildren, Brian Levstik, Jennifer Levstik, Laura Konz and Vannetta Oletski, other relatives and friends.
