Doris L. (Stookey) Harney, 92 years of age, of Nebraska City passed away Friday, August 9, 2019 at Ambassador Health in Nebraska City. She was born on December 3, 1926 on a farm north of Julian to Wesley and Mary (Feilen) Stookey. Doris graduated from Auburn High School in 1944 and earned an Associate’s Degree from Peru State College.She married H. Dean Harney on January 31, 1948 in Auburn. Doris taught rural school for many years and worked at FW Woolworth Company for 23 years. She was a lifelong member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church near Julian and a former member of the church altar society, Nebraska City Eagles Auxiliary, Extension Club and FCE Club. Doris enjoyed gardening, cooking, crafts, practical jokes and most of all, people in general.
Doris is survived by a son, Harry Harney and wife Sherri of Nebraska City; daughters, Janet Purdy and husband John of Lakewood, Colorado, Ann Mead of Fort Collins, Colorado; grandchildren, Kyle Mead and wife Adelle, Briana Francescatti and husband Nick, Jordan Silletti and wife Lizzi, Sarah Short and husband Tommy, Bonnie Carman, Becky Jeanneret; 6 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, H. Dean on March 12, 1992; son, Mike; infant son, Thomas; infant daughter, Mary; son-in-law, Tom Mead; grandson, Bryan Mead; and sister, Marjorie Leritz.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church near Julian. Interment will follow in the St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 PM with family greeting friends from 6 to 8 PM Monday, August 12, 2019 at Hall Funeral Chapel in Auburn. Memorials are suggested to the Julian Preservation Fund c/o Joe Epler, 63658 737th Road, Brock, NE 68320. Hall Funeral Chapel in Auburn in charge of arrangements.
