JoAnn (Hutton) Smith, 74, of Auburn, Nebraska was born on January 12, 1942, in Auburn, Nebraska the second of three children born to Frank M. and Gladys I. (Andrew) Hutton. JoAnn was raised near Nemaha, Nebraska where she attended Champion country school through the 8th grade. She later graduated from Nemaha High School with the class of 1960. After graduating, JoAnn lived in Omaha while working for Mutual of Omaha.
On May 3, 1963, JoAnn was united in marriage to Edward Smith at the United Methodist Church in Nemaha, Nebraska. To this union a daughter, Shelly, was born. The couple lived a short time in Auburn where JoAnn was employed at the A.S.C.S. office. JoAnn and Ed later moved back to Nemaha where they raised their family. In 1967, JoAnn was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. She continued to fight against the disease until 2005 when her abilities declined enough for her to become a resident of the Good Samaritan Home in Auburn. It was at this facility that JoAnn found many friends that were staff members and residents. She knew everything that was happening at the home and if you wanted to know something, just ask JoAnn. Some people even considered her the “Mayor of Good Sam”. JoAnn loved taking care of her dogs, playing cards with friends and family, and playing the piano. Her happiest moment occurred in 1998 when her grandson Branden was born.
JoAnn passed away at the Good Samaritan on Tuesday, July 5, 2016, having reached the earthly age of seventy-four years, five months, and twenty-three days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ed, parents-in-law Jack and Margaret Smith, brother-in-law Donald Smith, and sister-in-law Sylvia Hutton.
