Marilyn Jo (Smith-Behrends) Gruber, age 84, of Shenandoah, IA, died Tuesday, September 2, 2014 as a result of a car accident near Malvern, IA. A funeral service for Marilyn Gruber will be held Saturday, September 6, at 11:00 a.m. at the Hall Funeral Chapel in Auburn, NE. a luncheon will be held directly after the service followed by burial at the St. Paul (Hickory Grove) Cemetery near Auburn.
Visitation will be Saturday September 6, from 9 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
OBITUARY
Marilyn Smith, daughter of Harold G. Smith and Ruth E. (Randel) Smith, was born on May 19, 1930 in Auburn, NE. She was one of four children born to this union.
Marilyn graduated Auburn High School and attended Wesleyan University where she received her bachelors degree. She then went on to complete her masters degree in Denver, Colorado in library and information studies.
She was united in marriage to Dean Behrends on May 23, 1964. Dean taught school in Homesville, NE. They later moved to Texas and it is there that Dean passed away in 1994.
She returned to the Auburn where she was active in the community and loved to square dance. It is through square dancing she met Richard Gruber and the couple married on November 27, 2000. They made their home in Shenandoah, IA.
Marilyn passed away on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 due to a tragic car accident. She had reached the age of 84 years, 3 months and 14 days. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband Richard Gruber of Shenandoah, IA; his children Larry Gruber and wife Lena of Shenandoah, IA; Janelle Kroska and husband Ken of Fonda, IA; Jean Ann James and husband Randy of North Liberty, IA; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brother Randel Smith and wife Jane of Brownville, NE; brother Gregg Smith and wife Kathlene of Hastings, NE; Harold Smith Jr. M.D. and wife Barb of Philadelphia, PA; other relatives and friends.
