Royal “Gene” West, age 76, Falls City, NE. Passed away Friday, October 12, 2012 at the Falls City Community Medical Center. He was born August 27, 1936 at Stella, NE. He married Bonnie Ploof on May 3, 1959 in Morrill, KS. Gene grew up in Stella and graduated from Stella High School in 1956 where he played football and basketball. After graduation, Gene served in the U.S. Marine Corps for two years and was honorably discharged as a Corporal. He worked for Independent Lumber and then help construct the Cooper Nuclear Power Stations in Brownville and Nebraska City before retiring with heart related problems.
He was a member of the First Brethren Church in Falls City, the Falls City American Legion Post #102 serving several times as commander and was very active in the color guard. Gene enjoyed being outdoors repairing things, hunting, fishing, watching Husker football and going to coffee with his many friends. Most of all, Gene enjoyed spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie West of Falls City, NE; son, Larry West and wife Cheryl of Falls City, NE; daughter, Kala Richey and friend Bryan Dettmann of Falls City, NE; 3 grandchildren, Corey West of Omaha, NE, Craig West and wife Lindsey of Bennington, NE, and Skylar Richey of Falls City, NE; 1 great-grandson, James Royal West of Bennington, NE; many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Lillie Belle (Wolf) West; 10 brothers and sisters.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at the First Brethren Church of Falls City, NE. Burial will be in the Prairie Union Cemetery, Shubert, NE. Visitation will be at the Hall Funeral Chapel in Falls City Monday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday evening.
